To many people around the world, The Magic Circle is the most famous magic club in the world. Members include, or have included, David Copperfield, Paul Daniels, Dynamo and Prince Charles and me.
Within the club, there are a wide variety of magicians and people associated with the art. To become a member you have to be at least 18 years old. Professional performers, authors, inventors, historians, amateurs, semi-professionals and hobbyists make up the membership. As such, being a Member of The Magic Circle does not automatically mean you are a great performer. Within the club, there are different levels of membership and they are achieved in different ways.
If you are looking to book a magician for an event, here is a helpful guide to the different levels within The Magic Circle
A.M.M.C – Associate Member of The Magic Circle
This is someone who pays an annual subscription to be a part of The Magic Circle. They are not a full member.
M.M.C. – Member of The Magic Circle
This person will take an examination, which could be at the HQ of The Magic Circle or during a live show at which examiners are in attendance. If a certain level of competency is achieved, the person can become a member.
A.I.M.C. – Associate Member of The Inner Magic Circle
This is the highest level achievable by examination. It is a more demanding examination and those who pass through performance are awarded the degree “with silver star”. Members at this level cannot call themselves Members of the Inner Magic Circle.
M.I.M.C. – Member of the Inner Magic Circle
The pinnacle of membership. This level is limited to only 300 members worldwide. The only way to attain this level is by invitation of the President. Those who the president considers a performer of exceptional ability will be awarded this level “with Gold Star”. It is also possible to become an M.I.M.C. Through other means such as services to magic or The Magic Circle itself. They do not receive the “Gold Star” addition.
I hope this has helped you on the road to finding a good magician for your event. These levels are an indicator as to a magician’s ability. There are others you need to consider when booking for your event. For example, some of the greatest magicians in the world are amateurs! What else should you look at when choosing?
