The Magic Castle in Hollywood
Last month I was able to perform at The Magic Castle in Hollywood. When you think of somewhere that would be the mecca for magic, most people will think of Las Vegas. For me, it’s The Magic castle in Hollywood.
While Las Vegas conjures up the names of David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and Siegfried & Roy, it is The Magic Castle where the audience can experience magic close up and personal.
The Magic castle is situated at 7001 Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, a short walk from Hollywood Boulevard. It is an extraordinary place; it is a private members’ club and all guests must be invited by a known member or associate. Dress code is unwaveringly strict. (There is a story that even Jack Nicholson was not allowed in for not wearing a tie. He got one of his group to go and buy one for him). Within the walls of The Magic Castle, guests can experience close up magic, bar magic, parlour magic and a stage show, all performed by some of the greatest magicians in the world.
I was fortunate to be invited back to perform for a week in the Close Up Room which can seat up to 18 people with standing room for a few more. It is the perfect place to perform close up magic with the performer controlling the lighting, sound and environment. More in keeping with my Mystery Zone, there is no having to interrupt people’s conversations; no interruptions from other guests or waiting staff; no shouting over the noise of a band. Performing for people eager to see close up magic (Some queue for 30 minutes to get a seat!) it is a privilege and a joy to entertain them.
As a close up magician, performing in the close up room at The Magic Castle is right at the top of the performance tree. All close up magicians must be of an extremely high standard. After all, The Magic castle is a private members’ club whose reputation for excellence is known throughout the world.
