I was very impressed with the table decorations at an event in London last night. Very often there is a large floral arrangement in the middle of the table with a Roman candle or two for good measure. Whenever I turn up for a wedding, anniversary, birthday or other party and see huge floral arrangements of the kind Cheryl Cole would have tattooed on herself, my heart sinks. This is what they had on the tables last night.

With huge centrepieces, not only can guests seated at the tables not see one or two guests sitting opposite them, the table decorations block a few people’s view of me when I am standing table side. No matter where I stand there will always be a few people who cannot see what is going on. As such, they miss out on seeing the magic entertainment on offer and the group are split up, lessening the enjoyment for everyone.
As an experienced close up magician, I know how to deal with these situations but they are hard work and not always successful.
Much better is to raise the floral decorations off the table with the use of candelabras. Either that or have decorations that are striking but minimal I.e. Crystal trees, birdcages or contemporary designs. Not only can all the guests see and chat to each other but everyone can see me and the close up magic wherever I stand at the table. The event last night not only raised the glitterball off the table but the stand was transparent making it a double whammy.
