This was the way someone introduced themselves to me at a network meeting. Not your average greeting but a bold and powerful one nonetheless.
Since that meeting, I’ve thought about the question and how important it is. It is no use being great at something or producing a product you like if nobody has a need for it. Just because someone is good doesn’t give them an automatic right to be of value to you.
When you are looking to book a close-up magician, what problem is it you expect them to solve? Do you want them to create a fun atmosphere; keep people entertained during a lull in proceedings i.e. during the photo-taking part of a wedding or maybe use magic effects to relay a corporate message i.e. at a trade show or exhibition? Do you want them to stop the kids running around (a very expensive baby-sitter!)? Having the person you choose go around showing their tricks to people doing their own thing will make the close-up magician very happy but not necessarily you, or your guests or clients.
Admittedly, the vast majority of bookings I get are to provide entertainment and a fun atmosphere. I can do that. However, I’ve been asked to present gambling routines, pretend to be someone from accounts, dress up as Ronald McDonald and Superman (you read that correctly!)… all of which I declined. Each client had a specific problem; I just wasn’t the right person to solve them.
Maybe I can be the solution to your next event problem…
There are numerous magicians in the UK but not not all of them will be the right one to solve your problem. Before booking someone, make sure you know what you want the end result to be and ensure they are the best person to achieve it.
